This fireplace surround is part of a wall unit I did recently. The plan was to mount a flat panel TV as part of the upper surround , but because of the brick the TV mount would've placed the tv to far from the surround taking away from the mantel. So plan B was put into effect and a series of 3 raised panels would replace the TV. 
i love the style, the fireplace should need some protection so that the children will be safe also specially its a fire and it can cause burn..
